On my way
back to the Netherlands on Sunday july the 4th 2004 I had to wait for approx 1
hour before departure. I had parked my bike in the last lane and after some
time I saw a motorcyclist getting of his bike. He came to me and we started
talking about …. bikes of course. ;-})> His name was Kenneth Moore and lived
in Ramsgate, UK. He had been driving bikes all his life. I doubt whether he has
a car. Btw I didn’t ask him.
He told me
that he was 93 years old (1911) and his bike a Triumph Speed Twin 500cc was 42 years old (1962). I got interested and
went to his bike to make some pictures. He appeared to have been a test rider
for the Triumph factory after the 2nd World War and told me many stories of
what he had experienced during his life as test rider. Cops were always chasing
him but never could keep up with him. One followed him for 28 miles. It
appeared that the cop was interested in the new model he was driving on and
asked a lot of information. Of course this was factory secret. During his live
he gathered 200 old English bikes as a hobby. Probably more bikes than I had
seen at Sammy Millers museum. He recently overhauled his Speed Twin after
100.000 miles. Total cost 800 UK pounds. He had been offered 7000 pounds for
his bike but was not interested. Nor would I after having used a bike for 42
years.
You can
imagine that we had a nice 2,5 hours talking about a lot of things on the
parking lot and the ferry. So the time
past away very quickly as you understand. I told him about Sammy Millers museum
and our weekend in New Forest. He was going to his place in France. So I think
he still enjoys life very much. I hope he will keep a good health very long to
enjoy motorcycling
